As efforts continue to eradicate Varroa Mite from NSW, it is important to remember what it at stake. Varroa will kill wild honeybees across Austalia unless we stop it.
Efforts to keep Varroa contained have spared the majority of Australia from the worlds worst pest, the European Honey Bee.
Infested premises are sitting at 152. New detections fall within existing or recently extended emergency zones and have resulted in only a slight extension at the South eastern edge of the Central Coast eradication (red) zone resulting from a detection in the Woy Woy red zone and will impact a small number of beekeepers.
There is a corresponding extension of the surveillance (purple) zone into the Northern Beaches of Sydney, also impacting a small number of beekeepers.
The new detections, close to existing infested premises, are a result of comprehensive surveillance activities, which form a critical part of the Response as we work towards eradication of Varroa mite.
It is important to know your obligations as a beekeeper. You must register as a beekeeper, complete mandatory alcohol washing and know when you can and can’t move your hives. Find out more, including what zone you are in, on the NSW DPI website at https://fal.cn/3xyw7
