Sun exposure is the burning issue as communities across regional NSW soak up the summer holidays and try to beat the heat.
Shadow Minister for Regional Health Gurmesh Singh is encouraging everyone to stay sun smart as they spend time in the great outdoors, even on overcast days.
“Summer can be the most enjoyable time of the year, as we spend time relaxing with family and friends, but it can also be a dangerous one,” Mr Singh said.
“We’ve all seen the warnings around sunburn, particularly that 95 percent of melanoma and 99 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers are caused by overexposure to UV radiation from the sun and can be prevented.
“Whether you’re at the beach, cooking a barbie, exploring one of our stunning national parks, going for a walk or DIY-ing around the house, remember to always put on proper sun protection when you step outside.”
CEO and Founder of Australian Skin Cancer Foundation Jay Allen implored everyone to follow the five Sun safety rules – wear sunscreen (regularly reapply), protective clothing, broad rimmed hat, sunglasses and seek shade where possible.
“Our mobile skin check truck will be out and about over summer offering free skin checks – reducing cost and accessibility barriers,” Mr Allen said.
