Artist Sue Hodge has loved art from a very young age, telling people, “I was born with a paintbrush in my hand, it must not have been pleasant for my mum!” From the early days of primary school at Greenethorpe, her art began winning awards in competitions and Sue gradually realised drawing wasn’t natural for everyone.
“Until then I thought everyone could paint or draw what they saw around them. My dad taught me to be observe all that was around me, from the wheat fields to the different types of clouds in the sky,” said Sue.
Sue’s mum, also an artist, was her first art influencer and was committed to seeing Sue develop her artistic talent by attending night art classes at Young Tafe every week throughout high school.
“What isn’t to love about the ability share what you see around you through art. I love the colours of the land, the gentle roll of the hills. How sheep look like little balls of cotton wool on the green hills far away.
The colours at dusk and dawn, the golden streaks of light and the dark purples of the shadows.
“To be able to share the beauty I see by painting is a privilege and a thrill. I hope it gives joy and delight to those who look at my art,” said Sue.
It is with great pleasure that during balloon week this year, Sue will showcase over 50 of her works at the Canowindra Services Club. Some of the pieces date back to when she owned a Gallery in Broken Hill and will include paintings of outback scenes – vivid blue skies and red earth.
“Since those days my style has adapted toward impressionistic landscapes that capture the beauty of the Central West and some of the historic iconic buildings we appreciate.”
In 2024 this latest style proved successful with Sue receiving awards in both the Cabonne Art Prize and Grenfell Henry Lawson Festival.
For the Love of Art – An Art Exhibition Exclusively by Sue Hodge will officially open at 6pm on Tuesday 29 April at the Canowindra Services Club Hall and everyone is warmly invited to attend.
