The Canowindra High School Duke of Edinburgh students recently spent the week completing their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award in the Blue Mountains.
This involved a week of camping and hiking through some of the less explored areas of this World Heritage site. Students explored the Megalong, Jamison, and Grose Valleys by dropping into canyons and climbing the surrounding peaks.
The week of exploring was topped off with a day of swimming and abseiling through Empress Canyon, which really tested some of the participants (and supervisors) mettle when it came time to tackle to 30m abseil down the waterfall’s face.
All participants exceeded expectations and worked exceptionally hard throughout the week to meet all the challenges thrown at them by the terrain. A special thanks to Alison Stephens and the Canowindra High School P&C for assisting on the camp, as well as the Duke of Edinburgh Award National Office who subsidised the cost of the canyoning expedition.
