The most significant flood event since 1955 occurred in Canowindra on the evening of Sunday, 13th November. Flash flooding across local streets had residents rushing for sandbags to protect properties from early Sunday afternoon after a severe storm passed over the village.
The worst was yet to come, with the Belubula River at Canowindra breaking its banks and closing the John Grant Bridge at 11pm on Sunday.
An evacuation order was announced at 1am for residents of low lying areas in Canowindra to seek higher ground or attend the evacuation centre at Canowindra Public School.
The morning of Monday, November 14th residents awoke to rising water in Gaskill Street, with shop owners and residents racing the floodwater to protect their businesses and homes.
The Belubula River peaked at 11am on Monday, 14th November at 5.69m, with the bridge expected to be closed for several days.
The community of Canowindra came together to help those in need, with a massive sandbagging effort conducted on both Sunday and Monday, food delivered from local businesses to the evacuation site and local charities providing clothing and blankets.
Our Emergency Services personnel and volunteers also went above and beyond, working through the night and providing exceptional care to those in need.
